Biography

Born 1938 in Vienna, Austria. Lives and works in Prinzendorf, Austria.

1953 - 1954 he attends the "Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt" in Vienna and starts to develop a keen interest in literature, art and philosophy.

1957 Assistant at the Technical Museum in Vienna.
He develops the concept of the Orgien Mysterien Theater, a six-day
festival which constantly occupies his mind henceforth and serves as a
focus for all his aspirations. The O.M. Theater is a new form of
Gesamtkunstwerk. It concerns the staging of real events which directly
involve all five senses of the participants.

1960-66 Aktionen (action performances) and exhibitions in Vienna, which result
in several court trials and three prison terms.

From 1966 Aktionen (action performances), exhibitions, lectures and concerts in
Europe, the USA and Australia.

1971 Acquisition of Prinzendorf Palace.

1974 The 24-hour 50th Aktion (1 day and 1 night of the 6 Day Play) is performed
in Prinzendorf.

1984 The 72-hour 80th Aktion (3 days and nights of the 6 Day Play) is
performed in Prinzendorf.

1987 20. Malaktion at the Wiener Secession

1989 Nitsch teaches a class of interdisciplinary art at the Frankfurt
Academy of Fine Arts (Städel-Schule).
Hermann Nitsch repeatedly teaches a painting class at the Salzburg
Sommerakademie.

1990 8th Symphonie performed at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Vienna.

1992 89th Lehraktion at the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum, Ludwigshafen.


1995 The Vienna State Opera commissions Hermann Nitsch with the set design
and direction of the opera Hérodiade by Jules Massenet

1996 96th Aktion performed 12 hours, San Marino, Naples 28th Malaktion,
Schömer-Haus, Klosterneuburg near Vienna.

1997 40th Malaktion, Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Vienna, 20er
Haus.

1998 The 6 Day Play of the Orgien Mysterien Theater is performed at
Prinzendorf Palace from 3 - 9 August.

1999 Exhibition of relics, relic installations and videos of the 1998 6 Tage Spiel(6 Day Play) at the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Vienna, Palais Liechtenstein and at the Kiscelli Museum, Budapest.

1999 Orchestra concert: the music of the 6 Day Play is performed at the ORF
Radiokulturhaus, Vienna, the Hamburger Bahnhof, the Museum der
Gegenwart, Berlin, and at the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der BRD,
Bonn. Book presentation: Hermann Nitsch, Leben und Werk, KHM Vienna (author: Danielle Spera).

2001 Set design and costumes of the opera Satyagraha by Philip Glass at the Festspielhaus in St.Pölten. Teaching action: Aktion at Prinzendorf Palace.

2003 Exhibitions and actions: Sammlung Essl, Klosterneuburg near Vienna, teaching lessons at the Salzburger Sommerakademie, Book Presentation: "Das Sechstagesspiel"

2004 31.7. - 2.8.2004 the 2 Tage Spiel at the Prinzendorf Palace.
Visiting Professor at the Vienna University, Institut of Dramatics.

2005 granting of the "Goldene Ehrenmedaille" from the city of Vienna and the "Österreichischen Staatspreis",
teaching lessons at the Sommerakademie, Halbenrain, Styria, Austria, set design of the "Le Renard" at the Vienna State Opera.
