Ian Burns 3D-Strukturen bestehen aus rudimentären Materialien, welche die Rahmen für die Präsentation visueller Bilder liefern. Der Betrachter nimmt diese dadurch nicht nur als informativ und narrativ wahr, sondern noch etwas mehr als ihren üblichen reinen Unterhaltungscharakter. Mit seinen Maschinen erforscht Burns unsere visuelle Wahrnehmung und den Einfluss der kulturellen Dominanz der Leinwandbilder. Deshalb steht neben den offensichtlich politischen Anspielungen die Frage nach dem Punkt, ab welchem wir gegenüber dieser Bildsprache desensibilisiert werden, im Vordergrund.
Burns Maschinen liefern keine vorgegebenen Sichtweisen, auf welche man zurückgreifen könnte, denn deren Bewegungsapparate verlangen von jedem einzelnen Betrachter dessen ungeteilte Aufmerksamkeit. Sie bedürfen einiger Vorstellungen, damit ihre physischen Prinzipien, welche ihre Funktionen bestimmen, erfasst werden können und regen dadurch zu weiteren Vermutungen über deren mögliche Verwendungszwecke an.
